How To: Cleaning Your Stampin' Scrub

The second most used tool in my craft room is my Stampin' Scrub. I use it every time I stamp to clean my stamps whether they are wood-mounted, clear-mounted, cling-mounted, or photopolymer.

Just like any other tool, the Stampin' Scrub needs a good cleaning! The wet side scrubbing pad soaks up all of the Stampin' Mist and all of the ink left on your stamps after each use. Over time this residual ink and Stampin' Mist build up on the wet side scrubbing pad. It becomes over-saturated and doesn't clean as efficiently. You will start to notice reddish or gray-brown marks on your stamps. You may also notice that the wet side and the dry side scrubbing pads take longer and longer to fully dry. This is a sure sign that you need to clean your Stampin' Scrub.

How often you stamp will determine how often you clean your Stampin' Scrub. The more you use it, the more often you will need to clean it. I clean my Stampin' Scrub about every 3 weeks or less, if I have a lot of classes and events all at once.

The Stampin' Scrub is very easy to clean. First remove the wet and dry scrubbing pads from the case. Four little half circle tabs hold each pad in place. Insert a bone folder or your fingers underneath the scrubbing pad by one of the tabs and lift the scrubbing pad out of the case.

Place the two scrubbing pads and the case in a kitchen sink. Add a few drops of hand dishing washing soap to each piece. Wash and rinse the case with a sponge. Set the case on a kitchen towel to dry or wipe the case dry with a kitchen towel.

Then scrub each pad with a dish scrubbing brush or with your fingers, working the soap into a lather and all over the pads. You may start to see ink and residual Stampin' Scrub discolor the soap. Next rinse each pad thoroughly to remove all of the soap, ink, and Stampin' Mist. The water will run clear once the pads are fully rinsed. Set the pads on a kitchen towel to dry.

Depending on your climate, the Stampin' Scrub may take a few hours or a day to fully dry. My climate is humid. I leave my scrubbing pads out for two days to make sure they are completely dry. I prop my scrubbing pad up against the case to help the excess water run off the pads, but this isn't necessary. You can lay them flat.

After the scrubbing pads are dry, place them back into the case. Slide the pad underneath the two tabs closest to the hinge and then pop the other side underneath the two tabs farthest from the hinge. The pads are made to fit on either the wet side or the dry side, so you don't have to keep track of which pad is which. They are both the same. Your Stampin' Scrub is now ready for stamping!

To keep your Stampin' Scrub in tip top shape, be sure to clean it regularly and to allow it to dry between stamping sessions. I leave my Stampin' Scrub open on my crafting desk while not in use. This reduces the chance of mildew and odors.

The Stampin' Scrub is such a vital tool in my stamping that I have two Stampin' Scrubs, so I always have a Stampin' Scrub ready for stamping while the other one is drying!

I recommend only using water-based inks on your Stampin' Scrub. All of Stampin' Up!'s Classic Ink Pads are water-based.

I don't generally use my Stampin' Scrub to clean any stamps that have Whisper White Craft ink or Stazon ink. Whisper White Craft ink is a pigment ink that is closer to acrylic paint and will leave white streaks all over your Stampin' Scrub. Stazon ink is an alcohol solvent-based ink that is a bit greasy and can leave grease spots. However, if I am going to clean my Stampin' Scrub after using Whisper White Craft ink or Stazon ink, then I will use my Stampin' Scrub. Or, you can also dedicate another Stampin' Scrub to pigment-based and alcohol-based inks.
